Hanging Clothes and Saving Energy

In the last 3 months we have been without a dryer. Ours threw in the towel immediately after the holidays. Probably because of excessive wear! Man, for four people, we are certainly not a lot of laundry!

When we bought our washing machine and dryer, we went with a cool European small combo ... supposedly highly energy efficient and environmentally responsible. Uh huh.

"Apparently" does not last too long. "Allegedly" requires resolve, a European repair person to it,too!

Unfortunately it has not been right in the cards to get a mortgage on the payment with a foreign-dryer-repair-person in order to provide life-saving care to spend our little cups.

Oh, I need to hang the clothes.

At first it seemed like an inconvenience, astronomical proportions! I mean, there's one thing to "choose" to hang your clothes on the line ... If the weather is nice ... If you have time, etc. have had to, but your clothes hang - evenwhen it is cold or raining ... if you are in a hurry ... now that is a pain.

That was about the same time, I realized I was a spoiled brat!

I was reminded of the reflections of the same leading lady-like thoughts scraped off by the time that our microwave. I thought, "Hey, we have it three years without microwave the damn ... now I can do it without a damn dryer!"

I rationalized that a microwave oven has a negative impact on our health, so work around them and gowithout its perceived comfort was actually a blessing. I thought going without a dryer is a blessing for our energy and the environment as a whole would be. (Gotta look for the glass is half full!)

Of course, it was the middle of winter in Michigan ... the image of the freshly washed laundry blowing in the sunny breeze was a dream! No, for laundry day (s), our house looked like an oddly arranged second-hand clothing shop hung - all clothesavailable rod or hooks to dry!

I want to repeat silently to myself, "We are so happy to have these clothes ... we are so happy to have these clothes ... I guess these clothes ..." And so, ever once in a while, I 'd still sneak up on my dryer to see if it magically started, while I did not see!

You can not imagine how happy I am that warm spring weather has finally arrived! I think the clothes line is simply the greatest invention!

My neighborsthink I'm crazy. "Why do you always say so happy to hang laundry?"

I love it (today)! It is a few minutes out there that I might not otherwise experience. I have beautiful bird calls heard and seen many magnificent scenes in nature. I've chatted with neighbors more than ever before. I had my kids play in their imaginary roles, if they do not think I listened to eavesdrop.

Of course, it is also quite interesting that laundry has to somehowefficient: I will not do it nearly every day as before (I'll have to wait for sunny days!), and I seem not so much to do. No, I'm not just throwing away clothes when we have worn them! I think the whole process has only just us aware of how wasteful we have been, both with our time and resources.

It's fabulous! I'm not sure I feel that way come November if we do not have a dryer ... But now, it's great! Hanging clothes on the line forced me toto slow down my sometimes crazy rhythm of life and just relax. Yes, it has actually relax! I love the simplicity of it. I love the time to think.

I always end up thinking about my mother. How much I miss her, yes. But even more than that, I think of happy childhood memories and the beautiful life she created for our family. I am inspired to be the type of mother she was ... to create that simple, loving beauty for my children.

I think the whole time that mother and I spenthanging clothes together on the line. I had no idea that we did much more than just underwear ... we create a beautiful life, full of loving memories!
